Barely a decade after John W. Marshall found gold at Sutters Mill on the American River in California, the cry of gold! was heard again. It rang out in the foothills of the Rockies near present-day Denver.
Again adventurous easterners streamed west, hoping to strike it rich. Many did. For the discovery in June of 1858 along the Platte River was just the beginning.
