Since no other evidence of income was apparent, rumors spread that Juan Carlos had inside information on gold and silver hoards in the area. This became more prevalent when he hired Mexicans to do odd jobs for him and paid them in gold nuggets. People became suspicious when he left the valley in May, with a pack train of burros loaded with supplies. When he returned in September, his pack train was weighted down with mysterious sacks.
