The
Frenchmen's Triple Gold:
With the first sign of spring the Frenchmen
purchased new supplies, packed
their gear and headed back to the San Juans.
Leaving so early was a grave
error, for the storms of winter had not
completed their siege of the
Treasure
Mountain region. In that final gasp
of winter, temperatures plunged below
zero and
their sparse diet,
consisting almost entirely of meat, brought on the
curse
of scurvy. Half
of the party died of the dreaded disease.
