Lost Hoards on Louisiana Plantations: By now it was nightfall,
but there were three chests of gold and silver coins to be hidden.
Charles and the two slaves hauled the chests to the garden to
hastily bury them by lantern light at three separate sites beneath
the oak trees. The Yankees are coming!" When that cry split
the serenity of Louisiana plantations during the Civil War, wealthy
planters scurried to dig holes on their estates and bury their money
and valuables. They commanded slaves to drive cattle and horses
into the forests and swamps to evade the eyes of advancing Union forces.
