A Little Help From Our Friends

Dear Sir: I have a treasure map that looks authentic to me, but I need to prove it.  Can you suggest my best approach to this other than digging up the treasure.  Who could examine the physical map and date it without charging an outrageous fee? Thanks. Yours in all seriousness, Wendell J. Harper, wharper@esn.net

I have a 23 m.m. non dug button with an eagle on front with a J.W. in it. The backmark is a civil war era extra quality. I was told the j.w. was for a Jonnathan Watamaker. Anyone know who he was or a value of it? kcpjr@hit.net

Need help figuring out what the heck you just unearthed? Send your questions to: managingeditor@losttreasure.com Please put A Little Help in the subject line. We'll put the query in the next newsletter.

                                     Show Off Your Treasure Finds
Hi! I am J.C.Richardson III I live in Danville Va. I have been hunting for about 20 years. These are just a few coins that I have found in the Danville Park and my mother's yard (most I keep in my safe deposit box). The home was built in the late 1800s. She has four acres and she has just about all of it cleared. My brother has been hunting for about 15 years. He has a lot of nice coins too. We have a nice park and go there a lot. Danville was the Last Capital of the Confederacy. It is a lot of good places to hunt. If you go to a search engine and type in DMFAH - Last Capital Of The Confederacy it has a lot in there on Danville, Va.

I hunt with a White's Spectrum XLT--that it is one of the best White's made in my book. The first one I had was a C&G Technology BobCat VLF Discriminator-- that was a good one in its time, now we are much more advanced. I had a car wreck almost two years ago that left me paralized from my waist down so i don't know if i will get out and hunt like I use to do. Take Care, J.C.Richardson III     Click on link to view pictures...Picture name: coins1 coins2 coins3

Have you recently found a treasure you would like to share with the world? Email a brief description of the item, along with the general location (city and state) where it was unearthed, and a photo to managingeditor@losttreasure.com. Please put Show Off in the subject line. Well feature your item in our next newsletter.

                                                    No Longer Lost

Ancient burial ground discovered

CHESHIRE, England--A burial ground dating between 2,300 BC and 1,000 BC has been found at the site of a lost abbey. Also discovered were pottery shards. Ironically, the land where the remains were found, belongs to the city's former mayor. He has indicated the artifacts will be placed on permanent loan to the city.

Students hope to rewrite history books

STOCKTON, Mo.--Four summers in a row, archaeology students have camped out, digging one layer at a time, next to the banks of the Sac River. The crew first began concentrating on the late Paleoindian horizon, but this summer began searching for deposits dating back to the pre-Clovis era, 12,000 to 12,600 years ago. A large, broken stone that could have been from the Pre-Clovis time period has been unearthed. The group also found what might be a house structure as well as evidence of a workshop.

 Burrowed glass

WARWICKSHIRE, England--It was a hare that made the rare find--a piece of 14th century glass from a manor house. Rabbits burrowed what appeared to be a simple grass-covered hump, revealing a large quantity of hand-painted medieval glass. Because the glass can deteriorate rapidly after exposure to air, conservationists are scrambling to preserve the material.

                                                     Book Review
The Lost Cities of Colorado sketches Colorados turbulent gold rush era and the miners who came to Colorado, lured by the elusive promise of riches and a better life.  The main focus is on the lost cities and mining camps, along with stories of the miners who established these cities, and tales of lost treasure. It lists ghost towns and mining camps by county and gives directions to most of these towns.  It also includes listings from Colorado business directories and newspapers from the period...
