In the 1950s, a man named Bill Stafford (""Wild Bill") lived in a shack near Sycamore Creek. He had lived there for about 30 years and had panned for gold on Gold Creek, a tributary of Sycamore Creek. Over the years he accumulated a considerable amount.
It is known that ""Wild Bill" sold some of his gold on occasion to a jeweler in Martinsville for supplies. He was also known to be a real recluse and had no family.
It is believed by many in the area that he had made caches around his shack before he died in 1958.
Gold Creek, Sycamore Creek and Martinsville are all located in Morgan County, one of the areas known to have placer gold in Indiana. Permission to search the property must be obtained.
