As I have researched the 50 states in turn, I have run across numerous incidents similar to the following story. In 1917, two gold nuggets were found in the craws of ducks being dressed for the roasting pan near Onieda in Nemaha County. The natural assumption is that the ducks, which came from the G.W. Potts farm, gobbled the nuggets while feeding along the nearby Harris Creek. Since gold isn't known to be found in the area, the most logical explanation for the nuggets' introduction into the food chain was that they washed up from some long-lost cache or poke. In this case, speculation turned to a prospector returning east from the gold fields at Black Hawk, Colo., in the 1860s who reportedly drowned in Harris Creek. As it is likely the deceased prospector carried more than a pair of nuggets back from the gold fields, it is likely there is more gold left to be found in the area.
