For those interested in gems: one gem often mistaken for agate is the handsome and valuable thomsonite. Look for it along the shores of Lake Superior in northern Minnesota.
Pipestone County, Minn. produces the best quality catlinite found on the North American continent. Valuable in recent years, it has been found in other (mostly forgotten) localities in Minnesota.
A good place for agate hunting is along Minnesota's edge of Lake Superior. Most of these gemstones are high quality, either gray and white or red and white or various shades in color.
