Gamblers, trappers and river sailors are known to have buried caches near the old Rock Haven boatyard, located three or four miles north of Bismarck. At least two of these small caches have been found by treasure hunters using metal detectors.

In 1926, a whiskey runner reportedly buried $10,000 in $100 bills near a boatyard at Rock Haven, three miles north of Bismarck on the Missouri River.
