Here is a location that could pay off for a treasure hunter willing to do research into old newspaper files.
There had to be a follow up on this news story.
"July 12, 1905. Keith Dargan, until recently president of the Darlington Trust Company, South Carolina, and the Independent Oil Company, drank carbolic acid in the presence of his brother-in-law last night and died shortly thereafter. He left a statement (which company records proved later to be true) saying he had stolen $800,000 from the two companies within the last three months. Nothing is known about what he did with the money.
"The Dargans are prominent citizens of Columbia and will make restitution for the company's loss."
It seems unlikely that Dargan could have spent such a large amount in 90 days. By checking this story completely, a treasure hunter just might get lucky and learn what really happened to the money.
