The following is a list that covers all the counties in South Dakota where gold has been found: Aurora, Beadle, Bon Homme, Brookings, Brown, Brule, Buffalo, Campbell, Charles Mix, Clark, Clay, Codington, Corson, Custer, Davidson, Day, Deuel, Dewey, Douglas, Edmonds, Fall River, Faulk, Grant, Gregory, Haakon, Hamlin, Hand, Harding, Hughes, Hutchinson, Hyde, Jerauld, Jones, Kingsbury, Lake, Lawrence, Lincoln, Lyman, Marshall, McCook, McPherson, Meade, Mellette, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Fennington, Perkins, Roberts, Sanborn, Shannon, Spink, Stanley, Sully, Tripp, Turner, Union, Walworth, Yankton and Ziebach Counties.
Almost all the streams in the Black Hills still produce small amounts of gold for the panner. Remember that all 1.2 million acres of Forest Service land in the Black Hills are open to gold panning, except where claims are clearly posted. Don't be a claim jumper.
No sluices or placers are allowed without prior permission from the Forest Service. Only pans may be used in casual searching. To be completely safe, write the U.S. Forest Service, Mt. Rushmore Road, Custer, SD 57730 and ask for information on gold in the state.
