It is believed the name Tennessee came from the Cherokee Indian word Tanase, or Tenese, which means "the bends" or "great bend" in the Tennessee River. The first white man known to visit Tennessee was the Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto in the 1540's. The area has been known by four names: the Southwest Territory in 1780; Franklin in 1784; West, Middle and East Tennessee until 1796, when it was admitted to the Union as the State of Tennessee.

In 1864, the Brixie gang was operating around Hillsboro. They heard of a farmer named Cefe Wenten that did not trust banks and had buried his money on his farm. The gang hanged Wenten in an attempt to make him tell where the money was. They then tortured and shot his wife and children, but no money was found. Many people have searched for what is believed to be a $40,000 hoard, but no report of it having been found has been made public.
