When Elias Schapman plowed up a cache of gold coins in 1910 on his farm at East Belcherville in Hampshire County, it was pretty much accepted that he had found one of the old hermit's caches. The hermit -- whose real name is not recorded -- had occupied a hut on what eventually became Chapman's farm from 1840 to 1856. It is common knowledge that the hermit hid several caches in the area, and searches were conducted after his demise; but nothing was found until Chapman accidentally discovered a cache of gold coins with about a $300 face value in 1910.

Subsequent searches failed to uncover any of the hermit's other caches which are still thought to be hidden in the area.
