The pirate Blackbeard is sup-posed to have buried a large cache of treasure on Londoner Island in 1718. Interest in this treasure persisted into the 1940s when Prudence Randall, daughter of the Rev. Frank H. Randall, the owner of Londoner Island, protested that "government men who went ashore on our island without permission found definite indications that there was a substantial amount of silver still buried on the landing side of the beach facing the Star Island Hotel. We have been told that Blackbeard buried his loot here. The sand shifts so rapidly out there after every storm that whereas you might know where to look one week, the next week everything might be changed. The government men gave it up."
