Here is an update on "Missing Civil War Treasure in Vermont" by Teddy Remick in your February, 1970 issue. While researching another treasure I ran across this bit of information and thought your readers might like to know.
John Wilkes Booth was in on this raid, but was not among the eleven captured. The money was split up among 24 men, with the larger portion going to the man in charge (allegedly the lieutenant).
The 13 who were not caught arrived in Escoumins, Quebec, where they lived a very soft life during the winter in the house of one M. Barry. In the spring they were transferred to Halifax and boarded a ship for Europe, after which most returned to the U.S., as we know Booth did to assassinate Mr. Lincoln.
The information is from the book "Sur Les Sevtiers de Ia Cote-Nord," written by Eugene Ackard and published in 1960 in French.
